Cubs Fans Thought We Were Playing Bad

The Cubs survived May, but barely. The good news? We're playing the White Sox next!

The Leadoff Man

The Cubs limped through May, leaving fans clinging to JD's early-season optimism: if we could hit .500 by the end of May, we'd be in good shape. Easier said than done, right? Our bats finally woke up, but now our starting pitching is coming back down to earth. As we head into June, we find ourselves with a less-than-stellar record of 29-31. But here’s the silver lining: the White Sox are in even worse shape. Our crosstown rivals are struggling mightily with a record of 15-45 and an 11-game losing streak. Can we capitalize on their misfortune and start June with a bang?

He had a very punchable face!

Cubs vs. White Sox Series Preview

Northside vs. Southside Showdown!

Get ready, Cubs fans! The Cubs and White Sox clash on June 4th and 5th. I miss the days when the Cubs and Sox were good. Magglio Ordonez would be my enemy. I couldn’t stand Hawk Harrelson, and my White Sox friends and I would be vicious to each other. The best part about the Cubs-Sox rivalry is that we are all friends again when the Bears kick-off.

Here’s a peek at the pitching matchups:

Game 1: Tuesday, June 4th at 7:05 PM CDT

  • White Sox: Chris Flexen (RHP, 2-5, 5.50 ERA, 42 SO)

  • Cubs: Shota Imanaga (LHP, 5-1, 1.86 ERA, 59 SO)

Game 2: Wednesday, June 5th at 7:05 PM CDT

  • White Sox: Erick Fedde (RHP, 4-1, 3.12 ERA, 66 SO)

  • Cubs: Jameson Taillon (RHP, 3-2, 2.84 ERA, 29 SO)

We have a solid chance to turn things around with these matchups. Imanaga’s impressive ERA and Taillon’s steady performance give us hope. Let’s hope our bats stay hot and give our pitchers the support they need to secure these wins.

Windy City Classic Flashback

The Cubs-White Sox rivalry isn’t just about regular season games. From 1985 to 1995, the annual "Windy City Classic" charity game brought extra excitement. Alternating between Comiskey Park and Wrigley Field, the Sox dominated this exhibition series with a record of 10–0–2. One memorable moment occurred on April 7, 1994, when Michael Jordan, playing right field for the Sox, made an appearance at Wrigley. Jordan was with the White Sox minor-league affiliate, the Birmingham Barons, during his first retirement from the NBA. This classic series added a unique twist to the Chicago baseball rivalry and is fondly remembered by many fans.

White Sox Woes: Misery Loves Company

The White Sox are on a nightmare streak, having been swept by the Brewers in a three-game series, extending their losing streak to 11 games. Despite holding leads in each game, they couldn’t seal the deal, highlighting their offensive struggles, which many describe as the worst in the league. Questionable managerial decisions, particularly with pitching changes and baserunning, have only added to their woes.

Sentiment among White Sox fans is, unsurprisingly, overwhelmingly negative. Calls for manager Pedro Grifol’s firing are rampant, and there's palpable frustration with players like Tommy Pham and Zach Remillard. Even the broadcasting team isn’t spared, with many fans criticizing the new announcer Jason Schriffen. It’s a tough time to be a White Sox fan, and their misery might just be our opportunity.

NL Central Standings Update

Facing the Facts: A Look at the NL Central Standings

I honestly don’t want to look at the standings until July, but we have to face the facts.

  • Brewers: 36-23 | last 10 games: 8-2

  • Cardinals: 28-29 | last 10 games: 7-3

  • Cubs: 29-31 | last 10 games: 2-8

  • Pirates: 27-32 | last 10 games: 4-6

  • Reds: 26-33 | last 10 games: 6-4

It’s a mixed bag in the NL Central. The Brewers are on fire, while the Cubs and Pirates have hit a rough patch. But remember, Cubs fans: it’s a long season, and there’s plenty of baseball left to be played.

The Closer

Stay Positive, Cubs Fans!

The month of May was a rollercoaster, but as we step into June, let’s keep the faith. With the struggling White Sox up next, we have a golden opportunity to gain some momentum. Our pitching matchups look promising, and our bats have shown signs of life. Let's cheer our Cubbies on to victory and turn our season around.

Next Game Preview:

Look out for Imanaga and Taillon to set the tone against the White Sox. If our offense can provide some early runs, we have a strong chance to start June with a winning streak.
