Cubs Rise to the Occasion: Statement Win in Arizona

Unpacking Hayden Wesneski’s clutch performance and the latest bullpen strategies.

The Leadoff Man

Cubs take 2 of 3 from the Diamondbacks in Arizona; remember, they represented the NL in the World Series last October. This was a strong performance and I really think this was this was a statement series early in the season

Hayden Wesneski steps up big time, delivering stellar innings right off the plane from Des Moines. We'll also break down the latest the latest roster moves aimed at resting our bullpen, and take a look at the NL Central standings—and yes, we're ahead of the Cardinals!

Wesneski Wows in Surprise Relief Appearance

Despite being a last-minute call-up, Hayden Wesneski delivered a masterful performance.

Yesterday’s game became a strategic battle that highlighted the depth of our pitching roster. While Jordan Wicks battled against a right-heavy Diamondbacks lineup, Wesneski, freshly flown in from Iowa, completely changed the game. His 4 innings of dominant pitching were crucial, keeping the Cubs competitive throughout. This kind of adaptability could redefine our bullpen's role this season.

Cubs Shuffle Bullpen to Ease Workload

To ease the workload of their taxed bullpen, the Chicago Cubs have made several roster moves, recalling Hayden Wesneski, and optioning others to the minors. The moves come after a series of hard-fought games that strained the bullpen.

The Chicago Cubs have been dealing with a taxed bullpen in recent days, and the organization has made several roster moves to address the situation. The Cubs have transferred right-hander Julian Merryweather from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list due to a right shoulder strain, opening up a spot on the 40-man roster.

Additionally, the Cubs have optioned left-hander Luke Little and right-hander Daniel Palencia to Iowa, and they have selected the contract of right-hander Colten Brewer from the minors. Brewer, who spent time in Japan last year, has impressed the Cubs' coaching staff with his strong performance in Spring Training and at Iowa, where he has allowed just one earned run over 7.2 innings.

Too Early for Scoreboard Watching?

The Cubs are currently second in the NL Central, trailing Milwaukee by just one game.

It's early days yet, but Cubs fan's eye is already on the standings. With the Cubs at 11-7, closing in on Milwaukee and comfortably ahead of St. Louis, the season promises to be an exciting one. Success against division rivals will be key to securing a top spot. So, while it might be early for obsessive scoreboard tracking, it's never too early for a bit of friendly rivalry cheer—take that, Cardinals! Pittsburgh has come back down to earth after a red hot start.
