Tauchman Saves the Day: Cubs Win

Mike Tauchman’s heroics secure the win. Do the Cubs need more consistent hitters like Tauchman? Read today’s newsletter!

The Leadoff Man

Hey Cubs faithful, did you see Mike Tauchman's walk-off bomb last night? The dude's a beast! This performance sparked a chat with my wife about batting average and OPS (yes, I’m that guy). Tauchman perfectly illustrates the foundation of this Cubs team. Then he steps up with a walk off home run sealed a thrilling win against the White Sox, proving we need more players like him in the lineup. Let’s dive into the details of this and other key moments from our recent games.

Cubs Walk It Off (Again!) and Could Use More Like Him

Mike Tauchman’s walk-off home run sealed back-to-back 7-6 wins against the White Sox. These victories might not have felt as satisfying, considering the Sox beat themselves with balks and misreading pop foul balls, but a win is a win.

Ten years from now, we’ll be reminiscing with fellow Cubs fans, and someone will bring up Mike Tauchman. The consensus will be, “He was awesome and we didn’t use him enough.” This walk off Home Run will be one of the memories shared along with “The Catch” that beat the Cardinals last year.

Entering Wednesday's game, Tauchman was batting a respectable .264 with a .762 OPS, showing he’s more than just a decent hitter. His performance got me thinking. The league average batting average is around .240, and anything above an .833 OPS is All-Star territory. Tauchman, hitting .260-.270 with a .762 OPS, embodies the kind of player we need more of – someone who consistently delivers in clutch moments. Imagine having 4-5 guys like Tauchman in the lineup every day, plus one superstar. We’d be unstoppable!

Bottom line: Tauchman may not be a superstar yet, but he gets the job done when it counts. Let’s hope he keeps raking and the Cubs can snag a few more players like him.

Cubs Win on Balks and Blasts: Morel's Grit and Umpire...Umm..."Quirks" Take Center Stage

The Cubs win another game, showcasing Christopher Morel’s resilience and questionable umpiring decisions. Despite playing through pain, Morel continues to perform, and his grit is evident.

Wednesday night’s game was bizarre, to say the least. Christopher Morel, battling a nagging foot injury, showed true grit. He’s fouled off so many pitches on that left foot this season, it’s has to be affecting his performance on the field and at the plate. Despite this, he can still crush a ball, but he’s not at 100%. Next year, when he’s fully healthy, watch out – Morel’s gonna be amazing.

Now, about those umpires... yikes. I thought we didn’t have to deal with this crap Umpire work when Angel Hernandez retired. Well, his spirit seemed to haunt the crew from last night. Nico Hoerner got tossed for arguing balls and strikes, and he is the utmost professional baseball player. When he get heated, you know something’s up.

The balks were another story. The calls were questionable at best, and while I understand the concept, these left a lot to be desired. Hopefully, we won’t see another balk until July.

Despite the ump show, the Cubs pulled out the win. This team’s grit and determination are what can make them special. Let’s hope Morel gets healthy soon and the umpires... maybe just like Morel’s feet need to take a night off.

The Cubs are riding high after sweeping a two-game series with the White Sox, while the Reds are fresh off a stint in Colorado where they put up 6 runs in the 9th inning to sweep the Rockies in 3 games. Our pitchers better be exceptional this weekend.

Rotation Shakeup? With Jordan Wicks returning, our rotation gets interesting. Four spots are locked in, Shota, Steele, Taillon and Assad but the fifth is up for grabs. This series could be a make-or-break moment for Wicks or Ben Brown.

Get ready for some exciting baseball, Cubs fans! Let’s go out there and take care of business in Cincy! PS. Skyline Chili is Gross.
